Canada has been fully independent from the United Kingdom for over four decades, but it still has plenty of ties to the former empire. Queen Elizabeth II has had a spot on the front of the country’s $20 bill since the 1930s, and her grandson, Prince Harry, issued an apology after riling up some people by wearing a Dodgers hat while Los Angeles was facing off against the Blue Jays in the World Series.

In 1763, the British declared victory in the multifaceted global conflict known as the Seven Years’ War. The treaty that was signed to bring it to an end saw the French wave the white flag while ceding a sizeable chunk of its territory in North America to the United Kingdom—a development that set the stage for the latter’s colonization of Canada.

Britain decided to let that country begin to govern itself in 1867, and while it slowly reduced its grasp on the territory over the course of the next century, the crown technically remained the ultimate authority until Canada gained its full independence in 1982.

The Great White North has firmly carved out a unique cultural identity defined by its undying love for Tim Horton’s, hockey, and prolific politeness, but it still has plenty of ties to the U.K. while maintaining its status as a constitutional monarchy.

King Charles III is still officially considered the King of Canada and will begin appearing on its $20 banknotes in 2027 while replacing Queen Elizabeth II, who graced them for the first time in 1935 and remained on the bills until her death in 2023.

As a result, you might think Prince Harry would have firmly thrown his support behind the Blue Jays during the most recent World Series, but he had to do some damage control after he seemingly betrayed them.

Prince Harry, the grandson of Elizabeth and son of Charles, has been living outside of Los Angeles since moving to Montecito with Meghan Markle in 2020. He was known for his prowess on the polo field and rugby pitch growing up and has a particular passion for that second pastime, but there’s nothing to suggest he’s a diehard baseball fan.

With that said, the Duke of Sussex was front and center when the Blue Jays headed to L.A. to face off against the Dodgers in Game 4 of the World Series, and the fact that he and his wife (a Los Angeles native) wore the home team’s hats didn’t do much to ward off the boos they were greeted with when they appeared on the Jumbotron.

Harry also failed to endear himself to the many Canadians who were not thrilled to discover he’d decline to rep the Blue Jays, and during a recent interview with CTV, he issued a mea culpa addressing what he dubbed “Hatgate.”

He attempted to explain why he went that route, saying:

“Firstly, I would like to apologize to Canada for wearing it. Secondly, I was under duress. There wasn’t much choice. I was invited by the owner himself, so I was doing what I thought was the polite thing to do…

The other piece to this was when you’re missing a lot of hair on top and you’re sitting under floodlights, you’ll take any hat that’s available.”

He also noted he wore a Blue Jays hat at Games 5, 6, and 7 and pledged it would be the only one he dons going forward, but the damage may have already been done.
