There is truly nothing quite like Texas High School Football.

While high school football is big across the nation, in Texas, it’s a religion. And nothing quite makes that as clear as the bizarre story that developed Friday night that saved the season for the Amarillo Sandies.

Through nine weeks, the Sandies had rolled to a 7-2 record and were a lock for the postseason. However, on Friday afternoon, just hours before their rivalry game against Amarillo Tascosa, the Amarillo Independent School District announced that the Sandies would be forfeiting six of their wins due to the use of an ineligible player.

Originally, a win against Tascosa would’ve given the Sandies the No. 2 seed in the district playoffs and a home game. Now, however, they dropped to 1-8 and needed a win against their rivals and a ton of luck to even qualify for the postseason.

The Amarillo Sandies Got A Win … And A Ton Of Luck

Amarillo drilled their rival, beating Tascosa 63-21 to keep hope alive. The victory put them in a three-way tie for the final playoff spot.

Now, there are a number of ways you could break a tie. Strength-of-schedule. Common opponents. Point differential.

But this is Texas High School Football, so they do it the best way possible: a good, old-fashioned coin flip.

The coaches Amarillo, Lubbock, and Caprock then met at a Toot’n Totum gas station in Plainview at midnight to determine whose team stayed alive.

The rules were simple: all three coaches would flip, and the one coin that differed from the other (presuming that one did differ from the others), would be the team that advanced.

In what feels like a rare case of cosmic justice, Amarillo ended up winning the coin toss, keeping its season alive.

Texas High School Football Has A Rich History Of Coin Tosses

If this scene sounds familiar to you, it’s probably because it’s straight out of the book (and movie) Friday Night Lights. In 1988, powerhouse programs Midland Lee, Midland High, and Permian High were all tied for the top spot in their district.

But only two could qualify for the playoffs.

In this instance, the three coaches met up for a televised coin flip, with Midland Lee and Permian keeping their seasons alive.

This coin flip may not go down in history quite the way that the original did. But it’s just yet another display of the beauty that is Texas High School Football.
