Grambling State head coach Mickey Joseph stood on business after a violent brawl with Bethune-Cookman during the college football game in Louisiana on Saturday. He made himself very clear.
Disrespect will not be tolerated.
Multiple players on both college football teams were ejected from the contest for their role in the all-out melee. The incident took place at halftime of an eight-point victory for the Tigers.
Grambling State and Bethune-Cookman threw hands.
One of the most competitive HBCU matchups of the weekend lived up to expectations during the first half. Grambling took a four-point lead over Bethune-Cookman into the locker room at halftime.
The game was already physical. Both teams traded metaphorical blows during the first 30 minutes.
Unfortunately, they traded literal blows not too long thereafter.
Tensions boiled over as the players made their way back onto the field out of the locker room tunnel after halftime. It started first as some pushing and shoving.

The altercation very quickly escalated to something much bigger. Players on both teams started throwing haymakers. Some of them were thrown into the bench on the sideline. It was not just a fistfight, it was a full-blown brawl.

Here’s another look from the stands with some of the best play-by-play commentary you will ever hear:
The commentary is HILARIOUS (minus the “that’s why you in the SWAC) everything else was funny. “Coach, they wrestling”

Coaches, officials and even local police had to step in to break things up. Their efforts eventually proved successful but the deescalation process took more than a few minutes.
WILD!! Halftime craziness at Grambling vs Bethune Cookman. Tempers flare as the teams returned to the field after halftime.

Nine players in total were removed from the contest — five from Grambling and four from Bethune-Cookman. Conference and school officials will review footage of the incident and impose further disciplinary actions this week. I would imagine all nine players who were ejected will be suspended. Videos of the altercation could also lead to retroactive punishment for players who were allowed to continue.
Mickey Joseph will not tolerate disrespect.
Joseph, 57, was hired as the head coach at Grambling State in 2024 after a nine-game stint as the interim head coach at Nebraska. He seems to be turning things around. The Tigers went 5-7 last season. They are now 5-3 in 2025 after the win over the Wildcats.
Mickey Joseph spoke about the halftime incident after the win. He said the visiting players took their time getting out of the tunnel with the intent to cause trouble, which his team viewed as disrespect.
"We not going to tolerate disrespect here at Grambling," @GSUFootball01 head coach Mickey Joseph has his say on why the halftime craziness happened.

Joseph also put the blame on the Bethun-Cookman coaching staff.
“Be responsible and get your kids out the locker room,” he said. “Make them get to the field. They came down on the field. They walked on the field. That’s disrespecting the game first of all.”
Both coaches discussed the incident after the game and they agreed to involve their respective athletic directors in reviewing what happened. It will be interesting to see whether the conference chooses to reprimand the coaches.
