Dave Doeren may not be the head football coach at North Carolina State in 2026. He might not have much say in his future.
With that being said, it is clear he cares deeply about the Wolfpack’s success. His passion was on full display during the evisceration of a media member in his most recent postgame press conference.
NC State was beaten handily by ACC rival Miami over the weekend. The Hurricanes ripped off 41 straight points before the Wolfpack finally got on the board in the final moments of action.
Miami outgained North Carolina State by more than 400 yards of offense. The result was a 34-point shellacking. Doeren was tense in the session that followed.
North Carolina State football coach was asked a dumb question.
“Your birthday is December 3rd, right?” the media member asked while attempting to “lighten the mood” after the blowout loss.
Doeren was not amused. He handed the reporter a verbal lashing before the press conference concluded.
The most bizarre press-conference interaction I’ve ever seen.

“I just got my a– kicked,” he replied. “It’s not funny to me, do you understand that? I do this s— for a living.”
Doeren was not in the mood to be entertained. His team was beaten soundly to fall to 5-5 on the season. Those struggles have not only put North Carolina State’s bowl game pursuits in jeopardy, but they’ve also made the football coach’s future in Raleigh unclear.
Dave Doeren might be fired.
Calls for the coach’s job have been heard amid a disappointing 2025 campaign. There have also been questions as to whether Doeren actually wants to be the team’s leader.
“I really believe this will be his last year,” said insider Joe Giglio of Doeren’s future at NC State. “[Did] Dave have to be talked out of retirement last year?… Yes.”
Giglio claimed that Doeren asked to retire after a 6-7 campaign in 2024. The school convinced him to return.
Now, the coach’s $12 million buyout looms large. If fired, the Wolfpack will be forced to open up the checkbook, which Giglio believes is precisely what Dave Doeren wants.
His press conference response, though, offered a different opinion. Doeren clearly cares about the program’s success. The sting of losing was obvious – which might not be the case for someone with one foot already out the door.
Doeren has been rejuvenated by the 2025 North Carolina State football team. It seems a group he wants to continue leading next year and beyond.
“I hated coaching that team last year… There was so much selfish stuff on that sideline. We don’t have that on this team… They want to win.”
-Dave Doeren
NC State wants to win football games. Dave Doeren does, too. Unfortunately, it hasn’t happened in 2025. That could lead to the coach’s dismissal at year’s end.
This latest response, though, would lead one to believe Doeren would rather continue his stint in Raleigh as opposed to cashing in his massive buyout.
