East Butler played its entire high school basketball jamboree in Nebraska against Louisville in only one direction. Both teams were forced to score on the same basket because of a shattered backboard during warmups.
Fortunately, the game did not count toward the regular season standings.
The exhibition contest looked more like a blacktop game on a playground than a true high school basketball game with a packed house of fans. It was equally as weird and awkward as awesome.
Nebraska high school basketball season starts next month.
Most teams will not begin the 2025-26 calendar until the first week of December. They play the regular season through February with playoffs typically stretching into early April.
As the first game of the year quickly approaches, teams are getting a feel for where they stand through a series of preseason scrimmages.
Louisville High School traveled to East Butler High School on Tuesday night. Louisville is located about 27 miles southwest of Omaha with a total enrollment of ~200 students in Grades 9-12. East Butler is located in Brainard, Nebraska about 40 miles northwest of Lincoln with a total enrollment of ~320 students in Grades 9-12.
The two schools are separated by about 60 miles. So if one is going to make the hour’s drive to the other, they are going to play no matter what. Somehow, some way. It must be done.

Layup lines got a little bit out of hand. The Tigers and Lions were going through warmups when one of the players (I’m not quite sure who, or on what team) took to the sky to attempt a dunk.
As he came back down, the backboard came down with him.
It completely shattered. Glass was everywhere.
The staff obviously did its best to get things cleaned up but there was still a risk of danger and there was no way to replace the backboard before tipoff. It was what it was.

Because of the inconvenience, the entire scrimmage was played in only one single direction. Both teams had to bring the ball back beyond half court after a defensive rebound before they began their next offensive possession. It more closely resembled a game on the blacktop at recess.
Just your classic 3/4 court basketball game. A pregame dunk has shattered the backboard in Brainard. #nebpreps @nsaahome @Austin2Jacobsen @HurrdatSports pic.twitter.com/yybrNBzgeH

East Butler will not play its first home game of the regular season until Dec. 9. The Tigers have two weeks to get a new backboard in place!
