Ohio powerhouse Marion Local lost its first high school football game in more than five years on Friday. The Flyers saw their 76-game winning streak come to an unexpected end in the regional semifinal.
They took a knee on the final play of the fourth quarter.
Although the outcome was already decided at that point in the high school football game, it was still a classy gesture from one of the most dominant programs of all-time. Marion Local XXXXX.
An officiating failure kept the nation’s longest high school football winning streak alive in September.
Marion Local High School is located in Maria Stein, Ohio, right in the middle of Dayton, Columbus, Toledo, Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Fort Wayne near the Indiana border. The Flyers compete in Region 28 for OHSAA competition. They rarely lose.
Marion Local won 76-straight games dating back to 2020 with back-to-back-to-back-to-back state championships in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. It went 10-0 during the 2025 regular season but three of the final five regular season games were decided by only one point.
The Flyers were also gifted a wrongful win against the Versailles Tigers back in September. Officials ruled a catch on the field for a ball that was very clearly dropped and the controversial incorrect ruling allowed Marion Local to score a game-winning touchdown just a few plays later.
Nevertheless, no matter how it happens, right or wrong, a win is a win is a win is a win.
Marion Local lost in the state championship.
No. 1-seed Marion Local faced No. 2-seed St. Henry in the Ohio high school football state championship on Friday night. The former beat the latter by seven points during the regular season.
However, it was the Redskins who proved victorious when it mattered the most— the postseason.
They defeated the Flyers in Wapakoneta by a final score of 24-7. The nation’s longest winning streak came to an end at 76 games.
Marion Local had the ball last. There were only a few seconds left on the clock and a 17-point deficit was insurmountable. With that in mind, the Flyers chose not to run another play. They took a knee.
People are going to criticize Marion Local for not playing things out but the game was already over. To take a knee instead of running a 70-yard Hail Mary that would not matter either way showed respect to St. Henry’s and its dominant performance. There is a mutual respect between these two programs.
