The 2025 New York City Marathon set a race record with 59,141 runners trekking across the five boroughs for 26.2 miles. For many, this was their first time running the New York City Marathon and among those newbies was Eliud Kipchoge, who is a living legend and arguably the greatest marathon runner in history.
Kipchoge won marathon gold at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. He held the marathon world record between 2018 and 2023. And he has ran 4 of the fastest 10 marathon times ever recorded. To many, he is the G.O.A.T. and the 2025 New York City Marathon was his final marathon race as a professional. He saved the best for last to receive his 6 Star Marathon Medal for completing all six World Marathon Majors (Boston, Chicago, Tokyo, Sydney, Berlin, London, and New York City).
Throughout his career, Eliud Kipchoge prioritized marathon courses which were deemed ‘faster’ than New York as breaking records is in his DNA. New York is traditionally considered slower compared to the other 5 major marathon courses so he waited until his final race as a professional to run the NYC marathon for the first time and he touched a lot of people in the running community along the way.
Man Goes Viral After Being Moved To Tears Watching Eliud Kipchoge’s Final Pro Marathon
There was a video on Sunday which quickly went viral. TikTok user @TeyNeff posted the clip with the caption “Kipchoge’s biggest fan, this moment was everything” and it shows her new husband Max overcome with emotion and brought to tears seeing Kipchoge run by for the first and last time.
Imagine seeing Shohei Ohtani homer in the only at-bat you ever see from him. Or Tiger Woods stiff a shot to 2ft in the only time you ever see him swing a golf club up close. That’s the level of emotion we see here:

Is someone chopping onions? It got pretty dusty in here pretty fast.
The Running Community Helps Max Meet His Hero
As I said before, that video went viral almost immediately. I saw it scrolling TikTok on Sunday while there were still tens of thousands of people on the race course.
Another person who saw the video is Dutch long-distance runner Björn Koreman, currently ranked 980th in the world in the men’s marathon. He commented “putting a comment so I don’t forget to arrange something nice for Max
.”
Björn Koreman wasn’t chasing clout. He delivered on his promise. And less than a day later, Max got to meet Eliud Kipchoge who had then seen the video of Max being moved to tears.
They met up in what appears to be a hotel room and Eliud Kipchoge even gave Max an autographed running jersey as a keepsake from their incredible moment together:

Fellas. Let this be a lesson. If your girl sees you moved to tears because you were so overwhelmed with emotion at seeing your hero and she doesn’t go out and set up a meeting with him afterward maybe she’s not the one.
In all seriousness though, this was an incredible story out of the New York Marathon. There were thousands of moving moments but this one stood out above the rest to me so much so that I’m going to attempt to get into the 2026 NYC Marathon through the lottery (or charity). So if anyone out there can assist with that I’d love the help! The running/training I can handle, getting in is the difficult part.
