Northwestern played what was supposed to be a home college football game against Michigan at Wrigley Field on Saturday. It was an away game.
The Wolverines completely took over Chicago and out-numbered the Wildcats by a large margin.
Although this should not come as a huge surprise, given the size and strength of these two college football fanbases, the lack of attendance from Evanston is a shame. Show up for your team!
College football at Wrigley Field is slightly less dangerous today.
Wrigley Field officially opened as the home of the Chicago Cubs more than 110 years ago in 1914. The historic stadium was built for baseball.
However, there is a history of football at the Friendly Confines. It hosted 370 professional football games from 1920-1970, including five NFL championship games and five college football games. Northwestern has been a part of all five of those games, playing Illinois in 2010 and 2024, Purdue in 2021, Iowa in 2023 and Ohio State in 2024. Michigan joined the exclusive club on Saturday.
The east end zone of Wrigley Field posed quite the challenge for the first Wildcats game in 2010. Both offenses played the entire game in only one direction so players did not run into the ivy-covered brick wall in right field. It was not ideal.
Fortunately, Wrigley Field underwent a significant renovation that was completed in 2019. Although the ‘1060 Project’ was not focused on football, the baseball-focused upgrades made the field much better suited to host football games. The bullpens were relocated. The outfield was slightly reconfigured.
Here is how it looks today:
Although the current set-up at Wrigley Field is much better than 15 years ago, it still presents a safety concern. A football field barely fits between the backstop at home plate and the outfield.
As a result, there is a large (padded) wall just beyond the end zone to prevent players from slamming into the bricks. To say it is “tight” would be an understatement.

The hope, obviously, is to avoid a collision.
Michigan fans overwhelmed Northwestern.
Field configuration aside, this was not a home game for the home team. There was a pretty large contingency of purple in the end zone down the third base line.
NO GOOD

But that was about it.
It looked and felt like a home game for the Wolverines.
They were all over Wrigleyville during pregame.
It was a total takeover.
That trend continued inside of the stadium.
Northwestern fans are not the largest or most passionate fanbase, which presents a stark contrast to that of Michigan. The Wildcats entered the game at 5-4 and this was not their first game at Wrigley Field so perhaps some of the novelty had worn off. Whatever the reason, it was all maize and blue.
