Michigan is putting the blame back on Ohio State after repeated power outages sparked cheating allegations during the rivalry college football game in Ann Arbor on Saturday. The Wolverines do not claim any responsibility for what happened on the Buckeyes’ sideline.
This is after a heated altercation raised suspicions.
Head coach Ryan Day also hinted at a potential college football scandal with a very curious wink and his advanced preparation for this exact scenario. There is no clear answer as to what happened.
Ohio State lost power to its headsets on the sideline.
As of last season, college football coaches are able to communicate with one player on offense (the quarterback) and one player on defense (typically the middle linebacker) until there are 15 seconds left on the play clock. That became an issue on Saturday.
The Buckeyes repeated lost power to its communications system throughout the game. Coaches on the sideline could not speak to the box. Quarterback Julian Sayin also could not hear the coaches.
One particular video from the second half reveals a heated altercation on the visitor’s sideline. A group of coaches in scarlet and grey can be seen arguing with a person of interest wearing blue and maize.
Why was there a Michigan staffer on the Ohio State sideline? What caused the altercation?
We do not know for certain.
However, Ryan Day had his team ready for this kind of power outage because he had an “inkling” it might go out. They practiced this exact scenario during practice earlier in the week.
The seventh-year head coach also gave a very telling wink as if he knew there were shenanigans afoot.
Michigan denies any involvement in the alleged college football cheating scandal.
The Wolverines did not appreciate Day’s implication. They vehemently deny any responsibility for the power outages and put the blame right back on their opponent. The statement reads as follows:
“We do not manage their communication system. Each athletic department provides electrical power and fiber lines that are equal on both sidelines. Ohio State has staff within its athletic department that handles coach-to-player communication and the coach-to-coach headset system. The coach-to-player communication system is run by a third party chosen by the Big Ten. A neutral technician is on the sidelines to assist both teams at every game across the conference.”
Neither team is allowed to use their communications systems if one of the team’s system goes down. It would not benefit Michigan to sabotage Ohio State.
“With any cellular-based communication system, there are technical issues that happen from time to time in stadiums across the country. We don’t want the opponent to have issues because our team would have to take our communication system down as well. No one benefits from a system failure.”
As for the suspicious confrontation on the visitor’s sideline, the home team claims it was trying to help.
“In this instance, our game event manager, stadium supervisor, an electrician and staff immediately jumped in to assist with the issue on Saturday. The issue was resolved before anything needed to be taken offline.”
If this is true, and the Wolverines had nothing to do with what happened at The Game on Saturday, it creates confusion about Day’s wink. How could he have an “inkling” for this exact scenario if it was nothing more than a coincidence? Perhaps it was a gut feeling and a lucky guess.
Or maybe he was lying. Or, maybe, Michigan is lying!
