Condoms at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy are disappearing at an alarming rate. The initial shipment of 10,000 contraceptives was wiped clean after just three official days of competition.
How is it possible? Are the athletes that active, or are supplies being used for something else?
“Dating” is certainly happening at the Winter Olympics. It’s to be expected when placing thousands of competitors in a dorm-style environment for an extended time.
Add in the real beds at this year’s event and that should come as no surprise.
“It happens! Incredibly good-looking [athletes], perfect bodies, tight Spandex. Of course there’s gonna be some hooking up!”
-American skeleton athlete John Daly
On the surface, 10,000 units for 3,000 athletes being gone after 72 hours equates to about three condoms per day per athlete. Is there something else adding to the shortage though?
Former Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon dished on his experience at the 2018 Winter Games in South Korea. He cites a much less salacious reason that the stash has dried up.
Who is Adam Rippon?
Rippon competed for the US six years ago in Pyeongchang. He placed bronze in the team figure skating event. In doing so, he became the country’s first openly gay athlete to win a medal at the Winter Games.
He retired professionally later that year. Since, Rippon’s gone into coaching and media.
He’s been seen competing on and winning Dancing With the Stars, as well as making reality television appearances. He’s also provided figure skating commentary for NBC.
Rippon recently joined the network for a fan question/answer session, which was later posted onto Instagram. He provided a reason he believes the Winter Olympic condoms are disappearing so quickly.
“If you were wondering where 3,000 of the condoms went from the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, I took them… I wanted to know, where are all these condoms?
“I did eventually find them in the medical tent. In my mind, it was this lavish experience, but it was just a basket filled with condoms that said in Korean ‘generic condom.’ No Olympic rings. No fanfare. No frills.
“How do the athletes go through so many? I’ll tell you how I went through so many. I took that basket of condoms, and I opened my backpack, and I shoved maybe 3,000 of them in my backpack.
“I gave those to my friends as souvenirs.”
-Adam Rippon
Are Olympic condoms being taken for gifts?
Alpine skier Mialitiana Clerc, who competed at the ’18 and ’22 Winter Olympics before making her third appearance this year, echoed Rippon’s sentiment on the condoms.
“I saw it in Beijing already,” said Clerc. “There were some boxes with a lot of condoms at the entrance of every building where we were staying at the village.
“Every day, everything was (gone). I already know that a lot of people are using some condoms or just taking them to give to their friends outside of the Olympics because it’s a kind of gift for them.”
Clerc says that some of the contraceptives are being used for their intended purpose. A large portion, however, are being swiped for athletes to take home to friends.
Whatever the case, officials at this year’s Games are scrambling to keep up with demand. They’ll hope to successfully restock in order to cover the remainder of competition.
