Derick Hall was a star for the Seattle Seahawks in their win over the New England Patriots in Super LX. But according to the numbers, Hall was never even supposed to make it that far.
Of course, you could say that about anyone in the NFL. The odds of playing professional football are astronomically low.
But the third-year defensive end, who recorded two sacks and a forced fumble in the victory, shouldn’t even be alive according to the odds.
Super Bowl LX Syar Derick Hall Nearly Died After Extremely Premature Birth
Stacy Gooden-Crandle gave birth to Hall on March 19, 2001 in Gulfport, Mississippi.
She had been pregnant for just three months. At the time of birth, she was told her son had just a one percent chance to live. Doctors told her he was considered a “micro preemie,” weighing just 2 pounds, 9 ounces.
According to her words to the Seattle Times, Hall was born “without a heartbeat and considered dead at birth.”
She immediately refused a do-not-resuscitate form handed to her by the hospital.
Derrick went on to spend five months in the NICU. He battled brain bleeds and jaundice, and as he aged he had to deal with asthma and underdeveloped lungs.
But those didn’t stop him from pursuing sports, particularly football.
“I sit in awe sometimes in the stadium like ‘I just can’t believe this is our life,’” his mother told the Seattle Times in 2024. “… And just to see him on the field and to know where he come from and to know all the adversity that he faced to get to that point and the grit and the hard work and the dedication that he had just to be great. Sometimes I just sit in the stadium and I’m like ‘God, how did we get so blessed?’”
These days, Hall has a charity, the Derick Hall One Percent Foundation, that provides services and therapies for premature babies, and also aids local underserved communities with both food insecurity and youth fitness.
Hall’s story would’ve been incredible had he just survived to live a healthy life. It became more incredible when he became an elite athlete in the NFL. Now, after starring in the Super Bowl, it’s borderline unbelievable.
