Team USA is in pursuit of its fifth-straight gold medal in sled hockey at the Milano-Cortina Paralympics in Italy. The logistics of the rink itself are completely different to allow for line changes.
Players cannot jump over the boards like their stand-up counterparts!
There were only a few necessary adjustments to get the rink ready for the Paralympics. Competition is already underway.
Sled hockey rules are nearly identical to traditional ice hockey.
Sled hockey follows all of the rules listed in the International Ice Hockey Federation Rulebook. They are mostly the same as the NHL with just a few minor adjustments. The same goes for sled hockey. There are just a few minor adjustments.
“Players sit in specially designed sleds on top of two hockey skate blades. There are two sticks for each player instead of one, with metal picks on the butt end for players to propel themselves and a modified blade on the other end of the stick for stick handling. Goalkeepers wear the same equipment but with a modification to the glove (metal picks are sewn into the backside to allow the goalie to maneuver).”
Sled hockey features three 15-minute periods and six-on-six play. It is also a full-contact sport but checking with the front of the sled (known as “T-boning”) is not allowed.
Players who are eligible to compete in sled hockey have a wide range of mobility and cognitive limitations like spinal cord injuries, limb loss, spina bifida or cerebral palsy. There are other permanent impairments that may also limit participation in stand-up hockey.
Team USA sled hockey is already a Paralympic dynasty. It holds 11 total Para Hockey Cup titles and has won four consecutive gold medals in 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022. The United States is once again the gold medal favorite at the Milano-Cortina Games in 2026. Anything less than silver would be a catastrophic disappointment.
Captain Josh Pauls is competing at the Olympics for the fifth time. Declan Farmer is perhaps the biggest the biggest star and a key contributor to the sustained success.
He recently gave an inside look at his experience in Italy.
The Paralympics made adjustments to allow for line changes.
Sled hockey games are played on a regulation-sized ice hockey rink just like stand-up hockey. However, the rink looks a little bit different in terms of its construction.
Paralympic athletes are not able to jump over the boards during a line change so the benches are made out of ice. That allows them to skate on and off of the ice through an open door that opens away from the playing surface.
And because the players are seated on sleds just a few inches above the ice, they cannot see over the boards once they get to the bench. The Paralympics swapped out the boards so they are transparent.
Although the benches and boards are catered to the Paralympic athletes, the locker rooms are not. Sled hockey athletes must travel a long way to get to the ice. It is a beautiful facility but not at all convenient.
Team USA will play three games during the preliminary round of sled hockey at the Paralympics.
- Saturday, March 7 vs. Italy (W, 14-1)
- Monday, March 9 vs. Germany
- Tuesday, March 10 vs. China
The playoff schedule is as follows:
- Thursday, March 12 — Playoff Round 1
- Friday, March 13 — Semifinals
- Sunday, March 15 — Medal Games
The United States hopes to bring home its fifth-straight gold medal.
