Brian Hartline Bans USF Running Backs From College Football Locker Room As Punishment For Tardiness

USF Football Players Banned Locker Room Punishment Late Brian Hartline Rules

USF is not messing around during the first college football season with Brian Hartline as head coach. He and strength coach Antonio Turner recently banned every running back from the locker room.

It was a punishment for just one teammate being late!

Every college football team in the country has its own unique set of rules. Hartline wants to be very clear what will and will not be tolerated if the Bulls are going to win.

USF must stay competitive in college football.

South Florida has been on the rise over the last three years. Willie Taggart and Charlie Strong won 10 or more games in back-to-back seasons in 2016 and 2017 but the program very quickly fell off of a cliff.

The Bulls won seven games in 2018, four games in 2019 and only four games combined over the next three seasons. A 1-11 record in 2022 led to the ouster of Jeff Scott.

Alex Golesh was hired as his replacement in 2023. He led an immediate turnaround. USF finished at 7-6 with consecutive bowl wins in each of his first two seasons at the helm. It went 9-4 with a win over No. 13-ranked Florida at The Swamp last season.

The success of the Bulls in 2025 led Golesh to be hired by Auburn.

South Florida tapped Brian Hartline as the seventh head coach in program history at the beginning of December. The 39-year-old NFL veteran spent the last three seasons as the offensive coordinator at his alma mater, Ohio State. He is considered one of the best recruiters in the country. Players love him!

There is an expectation for continued success in Tampa without any kind of drop off. Hartline must continue to build on the foundation that is already in place. He is not taking that lightly.

The Bulls are set to open the spring practice period on Wednesday. They will play their spring game on April 19.

In the meantime, USF is setting expectations for the season. That applies to team meetings as well as the weight room. Brian Hartline and strength and conditioning coach Antonio Turner are running a tight ship!

Redshirt freshman running back Chase Garnett recently posted a video to TikTok that reveals the punishment for being late to a team event. Not only did the specific player who was late lose access to his locker, the entire position group lost access to their lockers.

When Ohio State safety Jaylen McClain joked that it was definitely “Hartline and AT” who did this to them, Garnett said “you already know.” They will not tolerate tardiness.

I do not know how long this punishment is going to last (the caution tape may already be removed) but I would imagine the running backs will get a clean slate for the spring practice period. Just don’t be late again! To go through spring ball without a locker would be brutal. Lesson learned.
