Is Aden Holloway Allowed To Play For Alabama During March Madness? Nate Oats Tasked With Ethical Dilemma

Aden Holloway March Madness Return Play Alabama Basketball Allowed Travel

Aden Holloway is allowed to leave the state of Alabama. That leaves head basketball coach Nate Oats with yet another moral dilemma prior to the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight.

Will he allow his star point guard to play?

It is not expected that the junior will play in the college basketball game against Michigan. However, a win over the Wolverines on Friday could allow him to get back on the court as soon as Sunday.

Aden Holloway is allowed to leave the state of Alabama.

Holloway, 21, was arrested on the morning of March 16 on first-degree possession of marijuana and failure to affix a tax stamp. The West Alabama Narcotics Task Force put him in handcuffs under the belief that he had an intent to sell because it found approximately 2.1 pounds of weed in his apartment.

I tried to give Holloway the benefit of the doubt to explain why it actually makes sense that it was all for personal consumption like he claims, but new evidence of “drug transactions” on his phone could put the nail in the coffin on his innocence. It would be hard to interpret a text message that asks if someone wants to purchase some tree as anything other than the intent to sell. We’ll see.

Holloway continues to refute “each and every” charge levied against him.

His preliminary hearing is currently set for Tuesday, April 14. The college basketball national championship game will be played eight days prior to the hearing on Monday, April 8.

Although Aden Holloway has not been with the Alabama basketball team during the NCAA tournament, the unresolved legal situation could leave the door cracked for his return. Innocent until proven guilty.

With that possibility in mind, Holloway’s attorney filed a motion on Thursday evening for permission of court for defendant to travel. His request was granted by Judge Joanne Jannik on Friday. She will allow the point guard to travel on a trip out of the state on Friday, March 27 to return on Tuesday, March 31.

Those dates coincide with the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight. That is not a coincidence.

Nate Oats must decide if his star point guard will play in March Madness.

Now that Aden Holloway is allowed to leave the state of Alabama, he is one step closer to getting back in the lineup. He can actually be in the same city as his teammates.

The Crimson Tide will play the top-seeded Wolverines of Michigan in the Sweet 16 at the United Center in Chicago on Friday night. Holloway is legally permitted to be in the building as of Friday morning.

That leaves Nate Oats with another tough decision.

He suspended his star point guard from the program after his arrest. Holloway was also removed from campus pending an investigation by the university’s Office of Student Conduct.

Oats could allow him to rejoin the team — either on the bench or in the lineup — if the university is able to expedite its investigation. Much like the legal battle in court, Alabama could also allow Holloway to compete while the investigation remains ongoing. He cannot be punished until he is found guilty on trial. Something like that.

There is a grey area here that might come down to a judgement call by Oats.

As things currently stand, Aden Holloway is ruled out for the game against Michigan on Friday. A win over the Wolverines would create a scenario where he could play in the Elite Eight on Sunday. I doubt it.
