According to Meta, it removed more than 159 million scam ads in 2025, along with 10.9 million Facebook and Instagram scam accounts. To help protect against future scams, the company also said it is introducing new tools on Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
To spot trends linked to fraudulent behavior, Meta says it is implementing new machine-learning systems across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. These new artificial intelligence (AI) systems will examine language, images, and contextual cues that Meta says conventional filters struggle to detect. This includes attempts to pose as public persons, brands, or steer consumers to bogus websites.
Meta is banking on AI to help solve the proliferation of scams on its social media platforms
Meta claims that AI offers a “new and different means” to identify con artists posing as public figures, celebrities, or companies. It will also improve their capacity to spot phony fan sentiment, deceptive profiles, and false connections to well-known people or companies.
Additionally, Meta will employ AI to proactively identify and block content that redirects users to websites that mimic authentic ones. With this technology, the company says it can more accurately detect a wider range of dishonest actions.
“Scammers are constantly evolving their tactics – and so are we,” Meta stated in an announcement published on Wednesday. “Every day, criminals use increasingly sophisticated measures to defraud people on our platforms and across the internet. That’s why we’re announcing new investments in advanced AI, tools for people to spot and avoid scammers, and partnerships with law enforcement and industry peers for offline enforcement.”
Among the new anti-scam tools Meta is implementing are Facebook alerts for suspicious friend requests, WhatsApp device-linking warnings, and expanded advanced scam detection on Messenger.
Also, to guarantee that verified advertisers generate 90% of Meta’s ad income by the end of 2026 (currently at 70%), Meta is increasing advertiser verification. The highest-risk sectors will be covered in that 90%, with the remaining 10% coming from low-risk companies “like your local ice cream shop.”
While all of that is certainly good to hear, Facebook reportedly has over 3 billion monthly active users, and Instagram has just slightly fewer than that. So, Meta removing 10.9 million Facebook and Instagram scam accounts is just a small drop in a very large bucket. Then there is Meta’s deepening use of AI, which brings its own set of potential problems.
