A high school basketball player in the state of Texas became an unlikely hero due to a technicality. The seldom-used reserve was unexpectedly thrust into the game in the final seconds.
After initially appearing to have ended his team’s championship hopes, he got redemption. He’d take full advantage of a second chance to book his school’s title game ticket.
North Crowley faced Duncanville in semifinal action as part of the UIL 6A Texas Basketball State Championships. The winner would move on to play for a championship.
Each of those programs is highly regarded, boasting Top 10 rankings. North Crowley is rated 13th nationally.
Despite being the favorite to advance, North Crowley was down in the final moments of play. The Panthers were given a chance to tie thanks to a foul. An unlikely hero was born.
Texas high school basketball provides drama.
Duncanville led 49-47 with 17.1 seconds on the clock. North Crowley was set to shoot two free throws after having a player fouled.
The intended shooter was injured on the play. The setback forced him to the sidelines. As a result, a teammate from the bench had to be selected as his replacement. Tyler Hastings was that player.
Hastings does not have a college basketball future. The senior’s career will wrap up when this season ends. He then plans to attend LSU on an academic scholarship.
Hastings was 4-for-4 on free throw attempts during the season. Naturally, he’d miss both tries in the playoff game after coming off the bench cold.
In most situations, that would end the game. The defensive team rebounds, is fouled, and puts the game out of reach.
Hastings, though, would get a second chance. It resulted in a storybook ending mirroring something seen on a movie screen.
Tyler Hastings was redeemed.

North Crowley grabbed the offensive board. A teammate found Hastings open on the three-point line. He drilled the shot to put his team ahead.
Duncanville would get one last chance at a win but missed. North Crowley added two more points from the free throw line to leave with a 52-49 victory.
The Texas high school basketball game produced an unlikely hero. Hastings was only playing due to technicality. Had his teammate not been injured, he would’ve never entered the game.
After a brief moment of disappointment, he received redemption with a clutch shot. North Crowley will play for state title against Brennan this week.
