The disdain was on full display during the Wolverines‘ 2026 spring game. Kirk Herbstreit refused to support his son’s school while rooting him on in enemy territory.
His presence in the Big House made waves over the weekend. He made it clear that he was on hand to cheer for only an individual, not the team.

Herbstreit is one of the most visible Ohio State alums in college football. He suited up as the school’s quarterback from 1989-1992. He’s since made a career out of commentating with ESPN.
His son is on the other side of the rivalry. Chase Herbstreit is entering his sophomore season with the Wolverines. He committed as a three-star prospect in the 2025 class.
Kirk Herbstreit attended the Michigan spring game. His outfit choice made immediate headlines. He refused to don the UM logo.
Ohio State does not like Michigan.
Herbstreit’s attire was notable, but not surprising. In fact, it’s par for the course. The Buckeyes won’t even acknowledge the Wolverines by their school name, let alone be spotted rocking Michigan gear.

Ohio State refers to the Wolverines only as “The Team Up North.” Speaking the name aloud is blasphemous.
Kirk Herbstreit kept with the theme at Michigan’s spring game. Despite his son’s decision to attend UM, you will not find the former Buckeyes repping his rival.
As for the history of the series, the Wolverines lead 62-52-6. Ohio State has current bragging rights after a 27-9 win in Ann Arbor last year, which ended a four-game rivalry skid.
