Southern Miss Baseball Player Displays Poor Sportsmanship During Walk-Off Two-Strike Grand Slam Celebration

Southern Miss disrespect bump troy catcher college baseball walk-off grand slam celebration sportsmanship

Southern Miss was down to its final strike during its college baseball game against Troy when a walk-off grand slam propelled the Golden Eagles to the conference tournament semifinals. Unfortunately, their incredible comeback was marred by poor sportsmanship during their celebration.

A player came out of the dugout and went out of his way to bump the opposing catcher.

There is plenty of reason to be excited about the epic college baseball victory. You still have to be able to control your emotions.

Southern Miss hit a walk-off two-strike grand slam.

As things currently stand, Southern Miss ranks as the No. 12 team in the country. The Mustard Buzzards are likely going to host a Regional in Hattiesburg, regardless of what happens over the next few days.

They earned the No. 1 seed in the Sun Belt Conference tournament with an overall record of 40-14. They played against the Trojans in the quarterfinals on Friday.

It all came down to the bottom of the ninth inning… Troy held a 6-2 lead with three outs remaining. Southern Miss quickly struck out for out number one. This is where things get interesting…

The Golden Eagles quickly put runners on first and third with a pair of singles. Two on, one out. They loaded the bases with a walk. Three on, one out.

The Trojans made a pitching change. Their new pitcher walked in a run. 6-3. Three on, one out.

Troy made another pitching change after the walk. Southern Miss immediately struck out looking. Three on, two outs.

Sophomore Drey Barrett stepped into the box for the No. 1 seed. Cooper Ellingworth was on the bump for the No. 6 seed.

Ellingworth quickly worked an 0-2 count. Barrett and the Golden Eagles were down to their last strike. He mashed a monster home run over the train in left field to clear the bases and win the game on a walk-off grand slam. It was sick.

The entire ballpark knew it was gone as soon as the ball hit the bat. Here is how it looked in real time:

Unfortunately, the dugout was needlessly disrespectful as it ran onto the field in jubilation.

The college baseball celebration sparked a kerfuffle.

If you are to watch the broadcast video closer, you might take extra notice No. 35. Redshirt freshman Logan Pratt got a little bit too big for his britches.

He ran out of the dugout to celebrate the electric walk-off two-strike grand slam with his teammates. I don’t blame him. It was an incredible college baseball moment. Celebrations are fun.

Unfortunately, Pratt let his emotions get the best of him and ruined the moment. Not only did he run onto the field, he ran over to Troy’s catcher (who got caught in the middle of the mosh pit), bumped him from behind and yelled in his ear.

Redshirt senior Josh Pyne took issue with Pratt’s behavior. He rushed to the defense of his catch and looked ready to throw hands if necessary. Pratt continued to bark. One of his teammates had to step in between him and Pyne before the situation escalated further.

The Golden Eagles earned the right to celebrate. There may not be a bigger swing in college baseball this season. Walk-off two-strike grand slams do not come around often. That does not excuse disrespect. There was no need for Pratt to bump the catcher. Especially when he doesn’t play.
