A strange, yet somewhat familiar-looking, scene unfolded over the weekend in Ecuador during a LigaPro Serie B soccer match.
The strange incident occurred during L.D.U. Portoviejo’s 1-0 victory over El Nacional. In the 72nd minute of the soccer match, Edison Caicedo was accidentally struck by a medical cart carrying an injured Portoviejo player as it returned to the sidelines.
It’s hard to say definitively who was to blame, the cart driver or Caicedo. On one hand, the medical cart struck Caicedo while he was walking absentmindedly, not paying attention to his surroundings. On the other hand, the cart driver should probably have told him to look out.
Also, while it surely didn’t feel great to get hit by the medical cart, it almost appears as if the soccer player’s pre-programmed reaction to being hit unexpectedly was activated as he dropped to the ground, crawling and flopping onto his back in apparent agony.
Of course, a number of people yelled at the cart’s driver as members of the Portoviejo staff hurried over to the scene of the accident.
Also, of course, while Edison Caicedo reportedly had a sore thigh, he was able to finish the match
The video sparked numerous comments and jokes
Many viewers of the video felt less than sympathetic for Caicedo, with many making snide comments and jokes on social media.
“It looks almost like the player flopped and was hoping to draw a card from the ref,” one person commented.
“Feels like I’m watching an OKC highlights video,” someone else wrote, referring the Thunder’s alleged penchant for flopping.
While certainly not as severe, the incident reminded some people of a certain scene that played out many moons ago in the Madden NFL video game franchise.
