There is no bigger stage in soccer, and perhaps all of world sport, than the FIFA World Cup, and winning at the FIFA World Cup, whether it be a match or the entire tournament, is a feat players would die to accomplish.
But when Austria and Algeria square off in the final match of Group J in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, there’s a great chance that both teams will be trying to…lose?
Yes, you read that right. Not only will both teams likely be trying to lose the match, which is scheduled for 10 p.m ET on Saturday, June 27, in Kansas City, but it also makes plenty of sense as to why when you take a quick look at it.
Austria-Algeria Loser Could Be Better Positioned For FIFA World Cup Success
The 2026 World Cup is the first to feature 48 teams, a drastic change from the 32 teams that featured in each tournament from 1998 to 2022.
Because of this, it means that several teams that finish third in their group will advance to the knockout rounds, which begin on June 29 with the round of 32.
Through two matches, both Austria and Algeria have beaten Jordan and lost to reigning World Cup champion Argentina, which means that they’re each likely to advance to the knockout round, with one finishing second in Group J and the other finishing third.
That’s where things get interesting.
BRING ON THE DISGRACE OF KANSAS CITY!
Algeria vs Austria
90 minutes of passive passing around at the back, 0-0 draw guarantees that both teams go through … and nobody wants to win because they have to play Spain in R32! https://t.co/zk7Wdiist0

As Martyn Ziegler of The Irish Times first pointed out, the third-place team in Group J may well be better-positioned in the knockout rounds than the runner-up.
Neither team can win the group after their losses to Argentina.
The Situation As It Stands
As things currently stand, the runner-up (currently Austria on goal differential) will take on presumptive Group H winner and pre-tournament favorite Spain in the round of 32. Meanwhile, the third-place team (currently Algeria), will face one of: the USA, Egypt, Iran, England, Ghana, Switzerland, Canada, Colombia, or the DR Congo.
Because all of the group matches will have been played by the time they take the field, both Austria and Algeria will know the opponent that the third-place team will face. Canada is the overwhelming favorite at 54 percent.
Therein lies the problem. There is an extremely strong chance that both Algeria and Austria will be incentivized to lose their final match of the group stage, recreating the infamous Disgrace of Gijon from the 1982 World Cup.
In the case of Algeria, even a draw in the final match would be “good” enough to secure third.
Perhaps Uruguay upsets Spain in the final match of Group H and changes the entire scenario. But if not, the 2026 FIFA World Cup may have a major problem on its hands.
