For some, getting on a flight can be nerve-wracking. For frequent flyers and pros, it’s seems like just another day. But that can lead some people to wonder: Can flight attendants really tell the difference between passengers who are new to flying and veterans?

According to one ex-flight attendant, most airline employees can tell. Florida-based content creator Maddie (@maddiegirlsworld) posted a video with more than 574,000 views. In it, she explains some of the tells that flight attendants note about different passengers.

What Do Flight Attendants Notice About Passengers?

Maddie starts her video by telling her audience what frequent flyers usually do when boarding a flight.

“ No. 1, we can tell if you’re a frequent flyer because you know where to put your luggage and tend to get settled in quickly,” Maddie says. The content creator wrote in her caption that airline employees will usually take note as passengers are boarding.

She also says that most airline employees keep track of families and children and that flight attendants can tell where passengers generally come from before flying. “We notice families traveling with children and usually try to keep an eye on them just in case they need any extra help,” the content creator says. “We also can tell if you came directly from the club to the airport.”

The last thing she mentions is that flight attendants typically notice passengers who may cause problems on flights, although she doesn’t elaborate on what these signs are.

What Do Flight Attendants Typically Notice?

According to Explore, flight attendants notice much more about a person than they may let on. The publication notes that flight attendants pay attention to passengers’ attire, baggage, and overall demeanor. Airline employees may also take note if a passenger seems especially anxious, or intoxicated, or if they need any special assistance.

Explore adds that “they’re trained to pick up on everything about passengers in the blink of an eye — in around three to four seconds.”

And Explore’s estimate isn’t necessarily an FAA guideline. Flight attendants generally have to be able to fully evacuate a plane within 90 seconds, according to Reader’s Digest. In order to evacuate a plane, flight attendants have to pay close attention to each individual on any given flight. Everything, from a passenger’s shoes to their overall character, can be useful to know in the event of an emergency.

What Did Commenters Say?

In the comment section, some viewers asked Maddie whether she was able to tell the difference between various types of passengers.

One passenger joked, “Can you tell that i’ve had 8 proseccos in the lounge before boarding.”

A second person asked, “Can you tell if we’re scared?” Maddie answered, “Sometimes! But I always tell people that flying is safer than driving so the scariest part of the trip is already complete.”

And, according to her, being kind to airline staff is noticeable.

“I notice when I’m super polite and have good manners, my flight attendants always seem to take extra care of me. Extra water, extra snacks, couple extra ‘anything else I can get you?'” one viewer said.

The former flight attendant said, “Yes! Being kind is noticed.”
