Third-year NFL quarterback Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears has a big season in front of him after leading his team to an NFC North crown a season ago.
But before Williams’ 2026-27 season can even get underway, he’s facing attacks from fans over his treatment of animals.
In particular, fans are asking questions about a photo Williams posted on Instagram of his recently adopted Doberman with cropped ears.
Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams Is A Dog Lover
It’s no secret that Williams is a dog lover. In fact, his love of animals even landed him in hot water after a loss in college when he told members of the media that he just wanted to go home and cuddle his dog and watch television.
At the time, Williams had just one dog, an English Bulldog named Supa.
“I’ve had a couple bulldogs when I was younger,” Williams told GQ in September 2023. “He brings a lot more swag and energy to my life.”
Since entering the NFL, however, he’s added to his pack with several large breds of dogs.
One of those additions includes a Doberman, which the star QB recently shared photos of. However, fans didn’t react the way that Williams would have hoped.
“Animal abuse doing that to their ears,” one fan said of the animal’s recently cropped ears.
“Mutilated the dog. What a piece of s—. It’s not even a newborn puppy. That poor dog,” wrote another.
Doberman Ear Cropping Is Purely Cosmetic
By cropping a Doberman’s ears, the dog gains a more menacing look to many owners. However, the surgical procedure is both medically unnecessary and can cause the animal pain, according to Doberman Planet.
Additionally, most owners choose to dock the animal’s ears when they are a young puppy. The Doberman in Williams’ pictures appears to still be around or under a year old, but certainly not a newborn.
So it’s unsurprising to see Williams receiving such stern backlash.
“Clipping a dog’s ears in 2026 is crazy, hope this dudes career goes horribly,” one person even wrote on X.
Ultimately, the procedure is completely legal and fairly common. But it’s not the best look, at least among animal lovers.
