Dan Nieboer is no longer the head football coach at Lely High School in Florida. He was fired just three games into his first season.
The Trojans have been downright awful to this point in the season. It’s forced administration to make a change at the helm.
Not all blame can be placed at Nieboer’s feet, though. His roster was decimated by transfers in the offseason. Some players were illegally recruited by nearby rivals.

The head coach’s tenure lasted just three games. The Trojans are 0-3, having been outscored 166-0. They’ve totaled -6 yards on offense to this point in the season. The latest setback came last Friday, 63-0, to Naples.
It’s disappointing for a program that has been relatively competitive over the last decade. Lely has won five games or more six times over the last 10 years. They went 9-4 last season before parting ways with head coach Ben Hammer despite having made two playoff appearances in three campaigns.
A national search for Hammer’s replacement took place in the offseason. Nieboer was ID’d as the guy. He moved 1,300 miles from Argyle, Texas to accept the gig.
Nieboer’s hiring was met with much fanfare. After three games, though, the school has decided to part ways. Lely released a statement on the firing this week.
“After careful consideration, a decision has been made to pursue a change in direction for the head football coach position,” the letter read. “As a result, Coach Dan Nieboer is no longer serving as head coach of the Trojans football program.
“Our building administration, including our school’s Activities Coordinator, worked closely with Coach Nieboer to establish a plan focused on player development and the overall operation of the program. Ultimately, we determined that a leadership change was necessary to best support the future success of our students and program as a whole.
“As we move forward with a national search for our next head football coach, we will prioritize player development, student-athlete growth, and a positive team culture as core values of the program.”

His roster played a large part in the lacking success. Lely High School’s top football players transferred after the coaching change.
Some players were contacted illegally by rival schools.
In July, Barron Collier head coach Brannon Tidwell was accused of recruiting violations involving Lely football players. An allegation was filed by Lely on May 28. It said four of its students were communicating to Tidwell via text. A former Lely student, who transferred to Barron Collier in January, helped the coach get in touch.
After being turned in, the coach admitted his infractions. Evidence was handed over. Tidwell was reportedly instructing players to visit campus, watch practice, and look at transfer paperwork.
Barron Collier High School may or may not have been the only team illegally recruiting Lely football players after the coaching change. Dan Nieboer was left with a thin roster upon accepting the job.
Just three games after his cross-country move, he’s been canned by his new employer. We’ll be on the lookout for a response from the former head coach.
