If history is any indication, Scottie Scheffler shocking arrest prior to the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship is a good omen for the No. 1 golfer in the world.
As it turns out, Scheffler would not be the first golf superstar to be arrested mid-major tournament only to return to the course and claim victory.
That honor belongs to the legendary Bobby Jones, the only golfer to have ever won the calendar year grand slam and the founder of Augusta National Golf Club.
The great Fred Albers reporting this isn't the first time a competitor was arrested during a major championship. Bobby Jones once left the Open Championship premises after a morning round, tried to reenter for his afternoon round and was detained. He wound up winning that week.

Scottie Scheffler Hopes To Imitate Bobby Jones After PGA Championship Arrest
Golf media member Fred Albers reports that Jones was once detained at the British Open after leaving the course following a morning round and trying to re-enter. He then went on to win the tournament.
Jones won the Open Championship in 1926, 1927 and 1930.
So history is on Scheffler’s side.
Scheffler issued the following statement after his arrest.
“This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.
Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.”
Police arrested Scheffler after he bypassed a stop due an accident in the area involving a bus and a pedestrian. Sadly, the pedestrian passed away.
Scheffler states that he did not know the man stopping him was a police officer, but rather course security.
Video shows police handcuffing and detaining Scheffler before placing him into the back of a police car which then transported him to an area jail.
