Diamondbacks Manager Torey Lovullo Risks Team Chemistry Over Fantasy Football Draft Order Stunt

Arizona Diamondbacks Manager Torey Lovullo

Evidence suggests that Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo knows what he’s doing when it comes to the vibes in his clubhouse.

Lovullo led the DBacks back to the World Series for the first time since 2001 last season and has them positioned to make the playoffs yet again this season.

But he took a risk on Friday when he stepped into the cage at Fenway Park and took batting practice in order to set his team’s fantasy football draft order.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Lovullo took batting practice prior to the Diamondbacks game against the Red Sox. Each ball he hit had a number corresponding to a player in the team’s fantasy football league. Whichever ball Lovullo hit the farthest would represent the player who got the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. With each subsequent pick decided by how far Lovullo hit each ball.

Starting pitcher Merill Kelly wound up with the top pick, while Joc Pederson will pick last.

That’s a risky proposition. Sure, your team is behind you now. But what happens when you screw up in BP and your best player ends up drafting 10th and stuck with CeeDee Lamb when he holds out for the Cowboys?

Now, it didn’t seem to affect the Diamondbacks on Friday night, as they went out and crushed the Red Sox, 12-2. But in a game where the DBacks had 16 hits, Pederson went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. He was the only player in the starting lineup who failed to record a hit.

MAKES YOU THINK!

Pederson’s .288 batting average is the second-best on the team among everyday starters. So it’s not like he’s been slumping all year long or anything.

Was he acting out at Lovullo? No, of course not That would be ridiculous and we’d never insinuate such a thing.

BUT MAYBE…
