WNBA refs have fallen under fire for a recent missed foul call against Las Vegas Aces star Kelsey Plum. Referees swallowed their whistles when Plum appeared to be tackled to the floor by Liberty defender Betnijah Laney-Hamilton.

Rather than landing a trip to the free throw line after the takedown, play continued.

There appeared to be numerous opportunities for officials to blow the play dead, though action was never taken.

Laney-Hamilton grabbed Plum as attempted to spin by, wrapping her arm around her neck. She then proceeded to toss the guard to the ground after having been beaten by the move.

As Plum went tumbling to the ground, the loose ball was corralled by the Liberty, who took it back the other way down the court.

The broadcast booth couldn’t believe the miss, saying, “I don’t know how you can miss this! It was a horse collar… That’s an egregious missed call.”

Viewers had the same response.

“WNBA refs are terrible.”

It’s been a tough season thus far for WNBA officials, who’ve caught criticism from both fans and players. They’ve been blasted for not blowing the whistle for rookie Caitlin Clark, who has been the target of physical play this year.

They’ve also had to make corrections for their handling of a double ejection on fellow rookie Angel Reese.

This most recent missed foul call on Kelsey Plum won’t do much to improve the perception of WNBA officiating. While Plum missed out on a chance to add to her scoring total, she still led all Aces scorers with 22 points on the night.

This “missed shot” was one of five on the night as she went 8-for-13 from the field. Despite the performance, the Aces would go on to lose a close one to the Liberty, 90-82.
