Lainey Wilson’s Duet With The Red Clay Strays Raises Questions About Her Lack Of Vocal Power

Lainey Wilson Butt 2025 Red Clay Strays Brandon Coleman

I really like Lainey Wilson. However, her most recent performance with Brandon Coleman of The Red Clay Strays proves she has lost some of her power and I don’t know what happened.

It was a fantastic duet but her vocals were completely dissolved by her male counterpart at the chorus.

Wilson rightfully performed as the headlining artist for the first night of Ottawa Bluesfest. She deserves that honor even though the nine-day music festival is not limited to country music. What initially started as a blues festival (hence the name) has since evolved into the fourth-largest music festival in North America ranging across all genres. This year’s lineup is pretty solid.

Anyway, the Red Clay Strays performed as the last act before Lainey Wilson on Day 1. If you are not yet familiar with the Mobile-based country rock band by now, it is my absolute pleasure to introduce you. I saw them perform for the first time in 2022 and they are one of my favorite bands.

Lainey Wilson and the Red Clay Strays rocked the house!

The Red Clay Strays are right in the middle of a meteoric rise to stardom that could not be more well deserved. Their sound falls somewhere between southern rock, blues, country and gospel.

Lead singer Brandon Coleman is something of a modern day throwback in terms of his look, his voice and his stage presence. You will not be bored at one of their shows.

Wilson invited Coleman to join her on stage at Ottawa Bluesfest for an impromptu performance of ‘God’s Gonna Cut You Down’ by Johnny Cash. It sounded great!

Although I am a fan of both artists, I cannot help but notice how Coleman completely swallowed Wilson’s vocals when they sang together at the same time. They each held their own on their respective verses but he blew her out of the water on the chorus. (And listen to that pop when he starts singing!)

I don’t really know what happened here. I have seen Lainey Wilson perform alongside some of the biggest powerhouse vocalists in country music, like Luke Combs and Chris Stapleton. At no point did I think she was belittled by her duet partner. She always kept up.

Not this time. Brandon Coleman dwarfed her.

Maybe this is an issue specific to his tone of voice and how it compares to Wilson’s. Perhaps the latter has lost some of her power. Maybe there was an audio issue. Either way, I was surprised to hear Coleman out-sing Wilson on a Johnny Cash classic!
