Michael Funk is confirmed to be okay after a wild wreck while racing on the Championship Off-Road series. He flipped at least six times down a hill before his vehicle finally came to a rest.
It is a miracle that he was able to walk away from the crash!
The Championship Off-Road series is short course racing at its finest. High-powered trucks and buggies compete on dirt track circuits featuring banked turns, jumps and rhythm sections designed for high-flying action. Drivers race side-by-side at speeds up to 100 miles per hour depending on the course. I am completely hooked on the series after watching just 48 seconds of a single race.
This specific race took place at ERX Motor Park in Elk River, Minnesota. The one-mile course features natural elevation changes, high-banked turns and a split-lane sandy section between turns two and three, which is unique for short-course racing. Various whoop segments test vehicle suspension and throttle control. Variable soil composition also causes the line to shift dramatically throughout a race.
ERX Motor Park’s primary circuit also includes its signature “Tallageda corner,” but the flyway jump is the highlight. Drivers get some serious air right out of a tight turn!
Funk felt the wrath of the flyaway jump during the Pro Lite race. He failed to land straight, which immediately sent him into a nasty roll down the backside of the hill. The broadcast angle of the wreck is brutal. The drone video that follows the initial real-time footage is even more intense.

In a testament to the importance of roll cages and seatbelts, Michael Funk was able to leave the scene under his own power. He was and is very fortunate. He will undoubtedly feel that wreck for the rest of his life but a crash of such magnitude could’ve resulted in a very different outcome. Six flips is no joke!
I would love to watch more of these Championship Off-Road races but they air exclusively on Flo Sports and nobody has Flo Sports. Oh well. I’ll have to get up to Minnesota to check it out in person!
