Iowa tried to challenge a made field goal during Saturday’s college football game against Washington, which led to one of the most unusual rulings of all-time. The play underwent a lengthy review only to determine that the play was not allowed to be reviewed.

The Huskies, down 10, lined up to attempt a 34-yard field goal with approximately 30 seconds left in the first half. Junior place kicker Grady Gross swung his kick high and to the left.
Both the back judge and the field judge held up their arms to signal that the kick was good. However, the Hawkeyes did not agree. They thought Gross missed and challenged the play with hopes that three points would come right back off of the board.

Upon further review, the ball flew directly over the right upright.
By rule, any kick that goes directly over the upright is not allowed to be reviewed. The call on the field stands.
In this instance, that was a made field goal so Washington was awarded three points. Iowa was not charged one of its timeouts because it wanted to review an unreviewable play. It also retained its challenge.
