Kevin Spacey continues to try to make a career comeback on the margins of the film industry, this time popping up in an Italian film called The Contract that will premiere at the Cairo Film Festival in Egypt this week. Not only that, but Spacey will be playing a character named “The Devil.”
We’ve actually heard from Kevin Spacey quite a bit this year, as he went viral for getting emotional while telling Piers Morgan that he’s broke, reportedly refused to leave his mansion after it sold in foreclosure, and popped up in a movie called Peter Five Eight, which saw him star as a “charismatic man in black who shows up to a small mountain community at the behest of his shadowy boss.”
This latest update is what we’ve come to expect from Spacey in recent years as he’s made a handful of Italian films.
“In the film, Spacey plays a role that has been described in promotional materials as somewhat akin to Al Pacino’s role in The Devil’s Advocate– or as Satan who takes the guise of a human lawyer. The tagline of the rather rudimentary poster for The Contract is ‘When Hell Surrounds You The Devil Is Your Last Hope.'”
“In the trailer, for what looks like a low-budget TV movie, Spacey’s character, is seen screaming lines such as: ‘I can feel it when they lie to me on purpose, and I go crazy!’ and ‘I don’t care about the past, it’s all long gone!'” [via Variety]
First and last of all: how dare they put Spacey’s name in the same sentence as Pacino’s, especially when talking about The Devil’s Advocate. Spacey couldn’t reach that level of performance if he was injected with uncut adrenaline.
In addition to The Contract, Spacey has also appeared in the Italian film The Man Who Drew God and the British independent film Control. Peter Five Eight marked his first American-produced film since 2018’s Billionaire Boy Club.
Spacey has been blackballed from Hollywood since 2017 after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and/or assault were made against him. Spacey has denied the accusations and has not been formally convicted of any crimes.
