The Notre Dame football program will have a new starter under center in the 2025 campaign. Veteran signal caller Riley Leonard will be off to the NFL when the Fighting Irish’s playoff run is over.
Colin Cowherd suggested that the team will be active in the transfer portal this offseason. He teased the idea of a prominent QB signing at season’s end.
“Riley Leonard’s going to the pros,” he said on a recent podcast. “There’s rumors that they may be in the portal for a QB at the college level that many of you have seen play for a big program.”

The Irish landed their current starting quarterback in the portal last year, luring Leonard away from Duke for one final season. Cowherd suggested that they might do the same for 2025.
The move paid immediate dividends for Notre Dame, who’s still competing for a national championship after winning its opening game in the College Football Playoff.
While Cowherd seemed adamant on the idea of the Fighting Irish dipping into the portal once again, conflicting reports have made things cloudy. Adam Gorney of Rivals says the insinuation is false. The recruiting expert stated that the team has no intention to bring in another passer.
I’ve been told Notre Dame will not be going to the transfer portal for a quarterback despite any reports to the contrary.@TJamesND

The Irish will have four quarterbacks on the roster after the departure of Riley Leonard, headlined by four-star prospects CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey. They also added Blake Hebert in the most recent recruiting class, flipping him from Clemson ahead of signing day.
Colin Cowherd suggests that Notre Dame will continue to elevate the QB room with a big-time commitment. Others aren’t sold on the idea. We may not hear anything until after the Fighting Irish finish the postseason.
