The Auburn basketball team picked up an SEC win over LSU on Wednesday as their pursuit of a conference title continues. National Player of the Year candidate Johni Broome showed out in the victory.

Head coach Bruce Pearl commented on his latest performance after the fact. He questioned Broome’s motives with a hilarious stat-padding accusation.

Broome racked up a double-double against the Tigers with 26 points and 16 boards. Eleven of those 16 rebounds came on the offensive glass. He was an absolute force in the paint.

His offensive rebound total was a career-high, besting he previous mark of nine. Pearl was asked about his star player in the postgame press conference. He jokingly questioned the validity of that output.

“Johni Broome had 11 offensive rebounds, and half of them were probably off his own misses… I think he does that on purpose.”

Broome missed 13 of his 23 shots from the floor, many of which came near the basket. He was able to track down a handful of those misses to convert into second-chance opportunities.

Pearl’s comment sparked an immediate comparison to former LSU women’s basketball player Angel Reese, who chased rebounding records of her own during her WNBA rookie season. Reese averaged 13.1 boards a night, with nearly 40% coming on the offensive glass.

A number of those offensive rebounds came off of her own misses, leading to stat-padding accusations from basketball viewers. Pearl quipped that Johni Broome was doing the same!

The big man didn’t seem too worried with how those numbers were recorded. His team got the win to improve to 19-1 as it holds onto the No. 1 spot in the rankings. He was all smiles after the game.

Broome leads the team in nightly point, rebound, assist, and block averages. He’s in a two-way race with Duke’s Cooper Flagg to land the Wooden Award, given yearly to college basketball’s top player. A few more performances like this could be enough to push him to the top.

With that being said, he doesn’t seem interested in the individual honors. He’s looking to help the Tigers make a deep run this March and hopefully secure a national title.
