Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart and the entire Georgia football community are morning the loss of Smart’s father, Sonny, on Saturday after he passed away following complications from hip surgery. Sonny Smart fractured his hip on Dec. 31 while walking around New Orleans prior to Georgia’s appearance in the Sugar Bowl.
The elder Smart played football at Samford University and then went on to coach at the high school level from 1988-2003.

“The Smart family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the Ochsner hospital and medical staff for the exceptional care provided to Sonny Additionally, they ask for your continued prayers for those affected by the tragic events that occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day,” read a statement from Georgia. “The Smart family treasures everyone’s thoughts and prayers and now prays for God’s comfort, strength, and guidance.”
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey also released a statement following Smart’s passing.
“Sonny Smart touched many people in his life and we are saddened to learn of his passing,” Sankey said. “I had the privilege to visit with Sonny many times and enjoyed every conversation. Our sympathies go out to Kirby Smart and his family and to all who knew his dad.”
