After one reported “prominent coaching agent” rang the alarm bell for New York Jets fans, warning that head coach Woody Johnson won’t make a good decision on the team’s next head coach, ESPN seems to be following suit, as one of their most plugged-in NFL reporters has predicted the team will hire Arthur Smith as its next leader.

Arthur Smith, 42 years old, first made a name for himself as a coach with the Tennessee Titans, rising from defensive quality control coach in 2011 to offensive coordinator in 2019 and 2020. Smith was then hired by the Atlanta Falcons, where he served as head coach for three seasons. This year, Smith was the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In each of his three seasons as the Falcons head coach, Smith posted identical losing records of 7-10 and was fired following the conclusion of the 2023 campaign with a record of 21-30 over three years.

Given how uninspiring his tenure as Falcons head coach was, and how the Steelers’ offense looked this year, Smith will surely be a name that’s at the bottom of Jets fans’ head coaching wishlist. Nevertheless, ESPN‘s Dan Graziano believes that’s the direction the organization will go in.

“I could certainly see the Jets ending up with Aaron Glenn or Brian Flores, but I’ve already predicted those guys to land elsewhere. (Arthur) Smith was a candidate of interest to Jets owner Woody Johnson back in 2021, when the team hired Saleh. But at the time, Johnson was serving as ambassador to the United Kingdom and was not directly involved in the search. The Jets also considered bringing in Smith and adding him to their offensive staff last year before the Steelers hired him as their coordinator,” reported Dan Graziano of ESPN.

Whoever Woody Johnson hires as the team’s head coach will be the eighth of his tenure since purchasing the team in January 2000. The team is also interviewing candidates to fill their open general manager position, making this the seventh GM that Johnson has had to hire.
