Washington State Quarterback Abandoned By His Former Head Coach After He Bolted For New Job

Washington State quarterback Zevi Eckhaus is likely going to take over the starting job in Pullman for the 2025 college football season after his former head coach left him behind. Jake Dickert never called.

The former three-star recruit did not receive an opportunity to play for the man who recruited him at Wake Forest.

Eckhaus, a former three-star recruit in the Class of 2021, began his college football career at Bryant University. He was named as the NEC Offensive Rookie of the Year as a freshman and threw for more than 6,400 yards and 74 touchdowns (with 25 interceptions) in 33 games over three seasons.

Dickert liked what he saw from the FCS signal-caller and offered him an opportunity to serve as the backup to John Mateer in 2024. Eckhaus accepted. He saw limited action during garbage time of the season-opener and then did not play another snap during the regular season.

However, Mateer entered the transfer portal prior to Washington State’s bowl game and Eckhaus was elevated to QB1. The Southern California-native rocked a sweet pair of socks for his first FBS start.

Zevi Eckhaus completed 31-of-43 passes for 363 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions during a 52-35 loss to Syracuse in the Holiday Bowl.

The 6-foot-0, 200-pound quarterback announced his plan to enter the transfer portal less than 24 hours later. Dickert left for the same job at Wake Forest so there was a lot of uncertainty about the future.

With the change in coaching staff, and the uncertainty surrounding my future, I have decided to enter my name in the portal until January 5th to explore any opportunities that may present themselves.

That did not last long. Jimmy Rogers was hired from South Dakota State to replace Dickert and presented Eckhaus with the opportunity to stay.

He accepted the offer.

As it would turn out, Jake Dickert never looked back upon arrival to North Carolina. The 41-year-old head coach did not call Zevi Eckhaus to gauge his interest in playing for the Demon Deacons. It wasn’t an option!

This kind of sticky situation is not uncommon in college football. Coaches often snub their former players when they take a new job at another school. That doesn’t make it any less awkward to get left behind.
