Indiana head coach Mike Woodson is set to retire at the end of the 2024/25 college basketball season. He was met by a mix of boos and pity cheers on Saturday after his decision was announced by the university on Friday afternoon.
On the flip side, Michigan coach Dusty May received a remarkably warm welcome in his return to Assembly Hall.
Woodson played for Bob Knight in the late 1970s. The 66-year-old was hired to replace Archie Miller in 2021 and has not lived up to expectations. The Hoosiers missed out on the NCAA Tournament last season and will likely miss out again this season. They went 14-9 through 23 games.
To make matters worse, Woodson often fails to take responsibility for the failures. Many Indiana fans also believe there is a severe culture problem with their college basketball program.
It was highly unlikely that the Hoosiers were going to allow their head coach to return next season. He was probably going to be fired. However, Mike Woodson got ahead of the inevitable and “decided” to step down instead. “His” decision was announced less than 24 hours before the Wolverines arrived to Bloomington for a crucial Big Ten matchup.
May was hired by Michigan during the offseason. The former FAU head coach began his career as a student manager under Knight from 1996 to 2000. He is beloved in Bloomington.
Thus, Saturday presented an awkward scenario because Woodson is on his way out and May is a candidate to replace him. It was uncomfortable.

Woodson received just as many boos as he did cheers during his introduction prior to tipoff.

Needless to say, Indiana fans are grateful that Mike Woodson was willing to step down. They would be even more excited if Dusty May was to replace him!
