Former Boise State superstar running back Ashton Jeanty is now a member of the Las Vegas Raiders after going 6th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday night. Most outlets projected Jeanty to go anywhere from pick No. 5 to pick No. 10, but he has Raiders general manager John Spytek and an interesting family dynamic to thank for ending up in Las Vegas.
Following last year’s draft, football fans clowned New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen for not listening to his son and doing everything possible to go get Jayden Daniels. This year, Spytek was smart enough not to make the same mistake.
“My oldest son has made it no secret that if we don’t pick Ashton Jeanty at 6 that he’s walking out of the family and he’s gonna find somebody else, probably whoever takes Ashton,” John Spytek said on a SiriusXM appearance earlier this month. “Jack is motivated by fantasy football and touchdowns. He walked right into our building and basically told Mark Davis ‘If my dad doesn’t take Ashton Jeanty, he’s doing a bad job.’”
John Spytek is, apparently, a family man. Because he listened to his son and drafted Jeanty who, does in fact, score a lot of touchdowns.
Jeanty, meanwhile, said he knew when he saw that interview that he would end up playing in Las Vegas.
“Once I [saw] that come out on social media, I’m like, ‘Man, there’s no way they’re not going to pick me at No. 6 if I’m there,'” Jeanty said.
In a similar vein, Schoen made sure not to make the same mistake twice. This year, his son accidentally teased on Instagram that he wanted his father to draft Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart. While Schoen used the No. 3 pick on Penn State star Abdul Carter, he later traded back into the first round to get Dart.
