Bill Belichick’s first year as the head coach at UNC is easily the most intriguing storyline in college football heading into the upcoming season. Hard Knocks was denied the chance to take a peek behind the curtain, but it looks like fans will still be getting one now that the program has tentatively agreed to participate in another project.
The football team at the University of North Carolina found itself searching for a new head coach following the conclusion of an underwhelming 6-7 campaign after Mack Brown’s second stint with the school came to an end after six seasons.
Things took a pretty unexpected turn in the wake of his firing after Bill Belichick was named as one of the top candidates to replace him at the beginning of December. Many fans were quick to dismiss that news as an implausible rumor, but the Tar Heels were actually able to land the legendary Patriots skipper, who agreed to end his brief retirement to take the reins in Chapel Hill.
The 73-year-old hasn’t coached a single game yet, but his tenure has already been filled with plenty of drama thanks in no small part to Jordon Hudson, his 24-year-old girlfriend and manager, who has generated a fair amount of controversy due to her tendency to throw her weight around behind the scenes.
In February, we learned HBO had targeted UNC for what was poised to be the first-ever installment of Hard Knocks dedicated to a college football team. Unfortunately, that plan reportedly fell apart due to Hudson’s insistence on being heavily involved in the production process.
However, there’s a similar project on the way.
A docuseries chronicling Bill Belichick’s first season at the University of North Carolina is in the works at Hulu
Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports was the first person to report on the ill-fated Hard Knocks series, and on Friday, he landed a new scoop while relaying the news of a new agreement that will give Hulu the right to produce a documentary following Belichick and the Tar Heels on their maiden journey.
Now, there is still a chance things once again fall apart in spectacular fashion, as the report says “two sides are finalizing the agreement” while noting “early-stage production” has already gotten underway.
Details concerning what to expect are subsequently fairly scarce, and it’s unclear if the docuseries will follow the Hard Knock formula (which relies on a rapid turnaround chronicling week-to-week developments) or a more traditional project that will serve as a retrospective on Belichick’s first season with the Tar Heels after it comes to an end.
The fact that Hulu got the famously media-averse coach to agree to participate in a behind-the-scenes documentary in the first place is a fairly notable development in and of itself. Hudson’s reputation for attempting to control the narrative could be a bit of a cause for concern, but in a case like this, something still seems better than nothing.
