It’s not super rare to come across a dog or two if you decide to post up at a place that specializes in craft beer. However, some drinkers in New Zealand encountered a different kind of pup courtesy of a baby seal that made its way into a bar over the weekend.
There is certainly no shortage of aquatic wildlife to be found in New Zealand when you consider the island nation is surrounded by more than 9,000 miles of coastline, including a few different species of seals that can be found in the country.
Its two primary islands and the water where they sit are primarily home to hundreds of thousands of fur seals (it also boasts smaller populations of he leopard and elephant variety), and it’s not rare to see them posted up on rocks and beaches near the coast.
Those pinnipeds tend to be pretty territorial creatures who don’t go out of their way to interact with humans and will typically make it clear they do not appreciate your presence if you try to approach them. However, that was not the case with one that was too young to know better and ended up trapped in the bathroom of a watering hole near the shore.
A seal was rescued from a beer bar in New Zealand after strolling through the front door
Spring+Fern is a brewery located in Richmond, New Zealand, a shoreline town situated on the northern tip of the country’s South Island.
Its primary base of operations is a warehouse located a short walk away from the water, but it also operates The Meadows, a beer bar that’s located across the street from a real estate development that’s a little more than a mile from the shore.
According to the Associated Press, that bar was the site of an unexpected scene on Sunday evening, as co-owner Bella Evans told the outlet she saw a small, furry animal make its way into the pet-friendly bar and assumed it was a dog before realizing she’d laid eyes on a tiny seal.

Surveillance video captured the seal evading a patron who attempted to scoop it up with his sweatshirt before making a beeline for the bathroom and eventually attempting to hide under a dishwasher.
Evans said they harnessed some salmon that was being used for a pizza topping to lure it into a dog crate, which rangers from the Department of Conservation used to transport it away from the scene around 25 minutes after the seal arrived (they said it was the fourth call they’d gotten about the roaming seal that day before it was finally tracked down).
The pup was no worse for the wear when it was captured, and it was successfully released on a nearby island.
