Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels named a new offensive coordinator on Monday morning, and it’s one that comes with a fair bit of baggage.
The Tar Heels finished with one of the worst offenses in FBS in Belichick’s debut season, rankings just 119th in the country in scoring (19.3 points per game) and 129th in total offense (288.8 yards per game).
After the season ended, Belichick parted ways with offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens, and now he’s found a replacement. However, it’s one who comes with plenty of controversy.
Bill Belichick Names Bobby Petrino New Offensive Coordiantor At North Carolina
Pete Nakos of On3 Sports reports that the Tar Heels are set to hire former Arkansas offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino to the same position. Petrino’s Razorbacks offense averaged 32.9 points per game in 2025 and some believed he could become the head coach in Fayetteville after Sam Pittman was relieved of his duties.
Arkansas, however, opted to go in a different direction, hiring former Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield instead.
On its face, the hire makes plenty of sense. Petrino is still one of the top offensive minds in college football. However, the move does come with a major catch.
Petrino previously served as the Razorbacks’ head coach from 2008-2011. He was fired early in April of 2012 after a motorcycle crash led to led to the revelation that he had been having an affair with former Arkansas All-SEC volleyball player Jessica Dorrell.
Petrino had hired Dorrell, who was 25 years old at the time, as student-athlete development coordinator for the football program just one month prior. Petrino was more than twice her age at the time.
Belichick, 73, is currently under fire for his relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson.
“It’s never been a better time to be a woman in her 20’s in Chapel Hill who is into old football coaches,” one fan joked.
“So did Belichick just not get enough chaos and drama in his previous life? asked another.
There’s no doubting Petrino’s football acumen. But given all the chaos around North Carolina over the last 12 months, you’d think the program would have considered going in a different direction with this one.
