Michigan Baseball Team Shelled By MAC Opponent After Backlash For Abrupt Cancellation

The Michigan baseball team fell to Miami (OH) in midweek non-conference action on Tuesday night. The RedHawks shelled Wolverine pitching to the tune of 12 runs.

The loss came following an abrupt scheduling change that resulted in backlash. The Wolverines might’ve traded a win for a loss in attempts to build their postseason resume.

Michigan was originally set to face Dayton. It changed its opponent days before opening pitch. Here’s why.

Michigan swaps Dayton for Miami.

Dayton entered the week at 21-18 with an RPI of 201. Michigan, meanwhile, was 24-15 and in position to vie for an NCAA Tournament bid.

The Wolverines held a Top 40 RPI after a series sweep of Big Ten rival Northwestern. In order to continue bolstering their strength of schedule, they cancelled the game with the Flyers and instead played the RedHawks on the road.

Sixty-four teams will make the postseason field. The No. 39 RPI rating put the Wolverines in striking distance, but similar to what’s seen in the men’s basketball tournament, bids will be stolen by mid-major champions.

Case and point, Xavier finished last year with the No. 39 RPI but was left out of the postseason despite a winning record against a Top 30 schedule. UConn, too, was omitted at No. 38.

Miami (OH) had an RPI of 57. It gave Michigan another chance at securing a quality win. With a schedule rated 55th nationally, the move made sense strategically though it did receive criticism.

“I’ve never liked when teams do this for RPI reasons. Play who you scheduled,” said one fan.

Another wrote, “This is so distasteful to college athletics! Play the schedule you signed up for at the beginning of the year like everyone else! Manipulating metrics mid-season is WEAK.”

In the end, the Wolverines might’ve passed up a win against a weaker opponent.

The RedHawks shelled Wolverine pitching.

Michigan jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in their first at-bat. From there, it was all Miami. The RedHawks scored nine runs across the first four frames to take a commanding advantage and never looked back.

They homered five times on their way to a 12-10 victory. They went back-to-back-to-back in the bottom of the second.

Miami piled up 14 hits. Seven went for extra bases. All 12 runs allowed were earned. The RedHawks ended up being the biggest beneficiary of the scheduling change as they’ll see a boost in metrics.

While the loss won’t hurt Michigan as much as it would’ve had it come against Dayton, it opened up the door for mockery. For what it’s worth, Dayton fell to Bellarmine on Tuesday night after replacing the Wolverines on the schedule.

As it stands, Michigan is 24-16 and 10-8 in conference play. The Wolverines have not made the NCAA Tournament in three seasons.

It’s scheduling change in this case backfired a bit. They’ll look to rebound against Bowling Green on Wednesday before a three-game series vs. Washington.
