College Baseball Coach Goes Ballistic When Egregious Ump Show Triggers Bogus Ejection For Harmless Behavior

College baseball ump show ejection wright state andrew duncan alex sogard

Andrew Duncan and head coach Alex Sogard were ejected from the Horizon League championship college baseball game between Wright State and Milwaukee. It was a total ump show.

The Raiders were directly impacted by the bizarre sequence of events. They never fully recovered.

For a college baseball umpire to get that worked up over nothing is a real shame. Let the boys play!

Wright State lost to Milwaukee in the Horizon League championship.

Wright State is typically one of the best mid-major programs in the country. This year was not quite as successful as years past.

Although the Raiders finished atop the regular season standings in the Horizon League at 17-7, they finished below .500 at 27-28 overall. And their season came to a disappointing end on Saturday.

Wright State played its way into the conference tournament championship as the No. 1 seed. Milwaukee did the same as the No. 2 seed. The Raiders won four out of six games against the Panthers during the regular season. The Panthers flipped the script when it mattered the most.

Milwaukee defeated Wright State during the second round of the Horizon League tournament by a score of 4-1. Wright State worked back through the losers bracket to set up a rematch in the championship. Milwaukee ultimately clinched an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on a walk-off home run, 5-4.

Unfortunately, the biggest storyline from the game was not the game-winning dinger. It was an ejection.

Rather, a pair of ejections.

The college baseball umpire ejected Andrew Duncan and Alex Sogard.

Wright State held a 1-0 lead over Milwaukee in the top of the third inning. Junior outfielder Andrew Duncan fell behind in the count 1-2 on a questionable pitch on the lower outside corner of the strike zone. He did not appreciate the call and expressed his displeasure with a head shake. It was a ball.

Duncan struck out swinging on the very next pitch. The umpire proceeded to throw him out of the game.

Video replay shows that he did not say a single word to the umpire as he walked back toward the dugout. Duncan might’ve glanced in his direction but his mouth did not open. He still got ejected.

Alex Sogard was understandably furious with the ruling. The Raiders’ head coach stormed out of the dugout to give the umpire a piece of his mind and proceeded to unleash his rage. Sogard is normally a very even-tempered guy. This was not that. He also got tossed.

When asked about the incident after the game, associate head coach Jordan Chiero stood by Sogard.

“To toss him like that without even looking at the umpire… [Sogard] doesn’t lose his cool ever, so for him to do something like that, he must’ve felt that the umpire tossed [Duncan] for a reason that wasn’t warranted.”

Based on the broadcast video, I would agree. It was an ump show.
