Hawaii is set to begin the college football season with only two quarterbacks on the roster after the mysterious departure of Maika Eugenio. The true freshman signal-caller is no longer with the team prior to the start of fall camp.
There are a lot of rumors about his unexpected exit but nothing has been confirmed.
Regardless of what happened in the last few weeks, the Rainbow Warriors are coming off of their most successful college football season this decade with high hopes for 2026. Their lack of depth at the most important position on the field could be an issue.
Maika Eugenio is no longer on the roster for the 2026 college football season.
At 6-foot-0, 205 pounds, Maika Eugenio ranked as one of the top-100 quarterback prospects in the recruiting Class of 2026. The Hawaii-native moved to Nevada prior to the sixth grade. He played his entire high school career at Las Vegas powerhouse Bishop Gorman and started each of the last two seasons. His 68-7 touchdown-interception ratio as a senior was even more impressive than his 4,805 passing yards.
Rated as a three-star recruit, Eugenio committed to Hawaii over Arizona State, Florida Atlantic, UNLV, Cornell and North Alabama. It was a homecoming of sorts. The Rainbow Warriors were excited about his potential with the proper development in a college system. They hoped that he could one day takeover the starting job as an upperclassmen.
As of right now, that will not be possible.
Maika Eugenio is no longer with the program. Head coach Timmy Change cited “personal and team-related issues.”
If the rumors about his mysterious departure are true, there might be an opportunity for a reconciliation in the future. We’ll see. He needs to take some time away from the field to get his private affairs in order first. Only then would Hawaii and other college football programs consider giving him a second chance.
Hawaii has a quarterback problem.
With the departure of Maika Eugenio, the Rainbow Warriors are down to only two quarterbacks — total.
Mountain West Freshman of the Year Micah Alejado led the conference with 24 touchdown passes last season and finished eighth nationally in passing yards per game. (Interestingly enough, he was actually the predecessor to Eugenio at Bishop Gorman.) He is back as the incumbent starter as a redshirt sophomore in 2026. The offense is in great hands!

However, should Alejado at any point be unable to play, there is only one man behind him. Redshirt freshman Bjorn Jurgensen is the only other quarterback on the roster. The former three-star recruit spent last season at Virginia and took a redshirt. He threw for 5,443 yards and 58 touchdowns with 1,203 yards and 23 touchdowns on the ground in three seasons at Bishop Moore Catholic High School in Orlando, Florida.
Hawaii does not have a third-string quarterback. Eugenio is gone. Only Alejado and Jurgensen remain. Not ideal.
