South Carolina blew another big lead in a football loss to Kentucky on Saturday. Shane Beamer’s job security is a topic of discussion.
Will he be fired? Will he be given the opportunity to finish out the season? An update on his status as head coach sheds light on his future.
The overwhelming feeling on social media Saturday night was that the Shane Beamer era at South Carolina was over. The Gamecocks lost in a growingly familiar fashion, jumping out to a 17-0 lead before watching the Wildcats storm back. They lost 35-34 in overtime.
Beamer looked defeated after the final play of the game.
Beamer has now lost eight straight SEC games. His team has held at least a 16-point advantage in three of the last four. That includes an epic collapse at Texas A&M last season where the Gamecocks blew a 30-3 halftime lead.
It’s becoming a trend. South Carolina football fans are tired of losing. Calls for Beamer’s job have been loud.
Will South Carolina fire Shane Beamer?
The coach’s buyout currently sits somewhere between $20-25 million. If fired at the end of the year, it will drop.
Beamer entered the season on the hot seat. The Gamecocks went 4-8 last year despite entering the season as a Top 15 team. It’s now 2-3 in 2026. Another campaign below .500 won’t help his case for staying employed.
With that being said, he feels safe at this moment in time. Administration is still in his corner. He expects to coach next week vs. Florida.
That sentiment was echoed by David Cloninger of the Post and Courier. South Carolina will not fire Shane Beamer after the loss to Kentucky.
If Beamer is let go Sunday, USC owes him in excess of $24 million. Then there’s the staff and the roster turnover at the end of the year, plus a new coach… USC would be looking at around a $50 million fee, and the school simply doesn’t have it… I was told it would be wildly, wildly shocking if a move was made after Kentucky.
Things could obviously change as the season continues. Noise will grow if losses pile up. A few boo birds were heard on Saturday. Fans might stop showing up altogether if the product is poor.
For now, Shane Beamer is safe. He seems to have lost the fanbase. His tenure will end when he loses administration.
