With November on the horizon, Paige Bueckers will soon begin her final season of college basketball. UConn expects to compete for a national championship and their fifth-year senior point guard will be the primary catalyst for success.
Not only is she the biggest star in Storrs, she is the biggest star in her sport!
Bueckers, the projected No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, decided not to turn pro at the end of last year. There were a few different factors at play.
First and foremost, the former McDonald’s All-American wants to cut down the nets at the beginning of April. Her desire to win played a huge role in her return to the Huskies. As did the opportunity to prove that she is still the best player at her position after Caitlin Clark stole all of the headlines last season.
Bueckers scored 21.9 points per game on a 53% field goal percentage last season, which was a career-high. She also averaged 3.8 assists, 5.2 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.4 blocks in 31.9 minutes.
Even though Bueckers likely would’ve been a top-five pick last April, this upcoming season could cement her legacy as one of the all-time greats. The 6-foot point guard tore her ACL halfway through the 2021 season and missed all of 2022/23 while rehabbing the injury. Now that she is back at full health, there are very few players in men’s or women’s college basketball who are on her level— both in terms of play and status.
UConn kicked off its season on Friday night with its annual ‘First Night‘ celebration.
Bueckers got the biggest ovation of the entire night.
