Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is the single hottest name on the NFL coaching market. After passing up head coaching opportunities a year ago, Johnson has already conducted interviews with the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots and is expected to add the Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars to the list over the weekend. There’s every opportunity he makes the jump from NFC North team in Detroit to another in Chicago.
It appears that would be the preference of Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, who fell victim to a prank on Friday when a fan pretending to be Johnson got ahold of his phone number and pretended to be Johnson.

Caleb Williams Gets Got By Obvious Prankster Pretending To Be Ben Johnson
“Hey Caleb, this is Ben Johnson,” a text to Williams read. “Just wanted to reach out ahead of time before it gets released to the media, I will be taking the HC job. Very excited to work with you in the future. Great things. I wanted you to be the first to know. We will talk more as the season winds down.”
Williams seemed skeptical at first, but later replied “I’m definitely excited for the future! Let’s get this s— going and turn it around and do what hasn’t been done in years.”
The prankster then FaceTimed Williams, making it clear that he was not Johnson. But Williams took it in stride and the fan wished Williams well going forward.
But hey, why wouldn’t Williams be excited about potentially working with Johnson? Detroit finished first in the league in points per game and second in the league in total offense this season. So it’s easy to see why he’s a hot commodity, especially among teams who are hoping to develop young quarterbacks.
Meanwhile Williams, the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, had a horrific rookie season. He ranked just 38th in the league in EPA per play among quarterbacks. That’s behind players such as Bryce Young, Aidan O’Connell, Kenny Pickett and Anthony Richardson.
So there’s plenty of room for improvement. Maybe Johnson lands in Chicago. And maybe he helps Williams turn it around. But it appears judgement isn’t exactly the young QB’s strong suit.
