Oregon football coach Dan Lanning is going viral on social media for his involvement in an extremely awkward commitment video. He threw his dignity out the window in order to secure his latest talent.
Five-star recruit Richard Wesley made his pledge to the Ducks over the weekend. He made sure to include his soon-to-be coach in the announcement.
Wesley is a 2026 prospect from Chatsworth, California. Initially a part of the ’27 class, he was a Top 5 overall player before reclassifying.
The defensive end has received offers from every notable program in college football. He’s taken previous visits to see Texas A&M, Tennessee, Texas, USC, and Ohio State on top of a few recruiting trips to Eugene.
On Saturday, he made his decision. He’ll be suiting up for Oregon at the next level.
Richard Wesley announced that decision with a poolside commitment video posted to social media. The clip, which included a Dan Lanning cameo, was hard to watch.

Followers weren’t quite sure how to react. Most could only cringe while watching the strange commitment video.
“Dan Lanning is willing to do anything to land a recruit,” one social media account wrote. “This is one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen.”
Dan Lanning is far from the first coach to post cringeworthy content alongside a five-star recruit. Brian Kelly refused to act normal around prospects upon arriving at LSU, resulting in an offseason of ridicule in Baton Rouge.
Lanning nearly matched Kelly’s cringe in his latest appearance. Still, he was able to secure his five-star commitment for the time being.
The announcement would seem to signal the end of Richard Wesley’s recruitment, though his father suggests otherwise. Jonathan Wesley didn’t know that his son was making his pledge on Saturday.
“It was kind of a shock,” he said. “We had a plan set in stone, but I guess the over-excitement… This whole process is a lot on a kid… Ultimately, when I talked to him he didn’t tell me to shut the recruiting down and he’s still very much open and interested in other places. This definitely isn’t a final decision because there’s a lot to be finalized.”
If Dan Lanning can hang onto Wesley, the awkward poolside commitment video will have been worth it. He’ll take two L’s if the defender opts to change his mind!
