Jim Harbaugh should be banned from coaching college football for life. At least, that’s what former rival head coach Urban Meyer believes. But Meyer’s belief has nothing to do with Harbaugh and his staff stealing signs from opponents. Instead, Meyer says that Harbaugh and several others should be banned for life for the way that they responded to NCAA allegations.
Meyer made the claim on the latest episode of The Triple Option podcast with Rob Stone. During one part of the show, they discussed Michigan’s self-imposed suspension of head coach Sherrone Moore amid the NCAA’s ongoing investigation into the Wolverines’ program. Meyer, who has quite the history with the NCAA in his own right, believes that any coach caught lying to the NCAA during an investigation should not be allowed to return to coaching at the college level.

Urban Meyer Calls For Lifetime Bans To Coaches Caught Lying To The NCAA
“If you lie, as a college football coach, to the NCAA – in my personal opinion – you are finished. You are done,” he said. “That’s not sending a text message. That’s not going to lunch with someone you’re not supposed to go to lunch with. That’s not you sent a letter when you weren’t supposed to or any of the frivolous Level III violations.
“But when they’ve got you, and they ask ‘Did you do this?’ and they refuse to cooperate, or they lie, in my very strong opinion, you are finished coaching in Division I college football, or basketball, or whatever sport.
“Because here is what happens. The risk now [for coaches to lie] is too high and I don’t think you ever see this kind of stuff again.”
Meyer believes that coaches are currently incentivized to lie. And he’s not wrong! Recent evidence suggests that the best thing you can do in the wake of the NCAA investigation is lie your butt off. The only time schools and programs have been seriously punished by the NCAA is when they’ve admitted wrongdoing.
So in Meyer’s mind, the best way to prevent that is to make the penalty for lying so serious that no coach who wants to continue at the college level would ever dare to do so.
While he didn’t mention Harbaugh by name, the former Wolverines coach firmly falls under that blanket. He’s currently serving a four-year “show-cause order” after, among other things, lying to the NCAA. Maybe Harbaugh lies either way. He did, after all, win a national championship. And he’s probably never returning to college coaching.
But there are plenty of other coaches who have been caught lying and later returned to college coaching. So Meyer might be onto something.
