14 Viral Moments From Week 5 Of The College Football Season You Need To Relive

Viral moments from Week 5 of the college football season.

Week 5 of the college football season has come and gone, and as the sport always does, it delivered. There were upsets, comebacks, heartbreaks, Hail Mary’s, and fans on the field. It never disappoints.

This week, we’re dropping a new blog series rounding up the best, most viral moments from the action. Some you may have seen. Others you might’ve missed. Either way, they’re necessary to relive.

14 best moments from Week 5 of the college football season.

The drama got started early on Thursday night in a thriller between a pair of American Conference foes. It continued into Friday before taking centerstage on Saturday.

I cannot bring myself to rank these moments from 1-14, so let’s just move through this in chronological order. Opening day couldn’t have been more dramatic.

North Texas holds on.

This game was out of control. Both sides went down by two scores only to storm back and even the score. Tulsa was up 14-3 early. North Texas scored 28 of the next 31 points to take a 31-17 advantage.

The Golden Hurricane later forced overtime with a touchdown in the final minute of regulation. Both teams scored in overtime. Tulsa went for two points and the win.

The conversion failed (or did it?). A footrace to the endzone was stopped inches from the goal line. The Mean Green held on for a 45-44 victory.

Idaho upsets No. 1.

This game was ridiculous for a number of reasons. Idaho entered winless. Montana State was No. 1 in the FCS poll. It was expected to be a blowout. The Bobcats appeared to gain control with 17 straight points in the second half. The Vandals wouldn’t go away.

Montana State led 34-20 in the fourth quarter. Idaho stormed back to score the game’s final 15 points. It threw a touchdown pass on the final play of the game, aided by a head scratching Montana State timeout, then won the game on a two-point try.

Northwestern takes New Ryan Field for the first time.

Northwestern made its debut in the New Ryan Field on Friday night against Penn State. The entrance was absolutely electric. AC/DC, a lightshow, fireworks. It had it all.

The venue took more than two years to complete and cost north of $850 million. No expense was spared, outside of the visitor’s locker room.

The Wildcats didn’t disappoint the sold-out crowd, beating the Nittany Lions 34-13 to make an emphatic Big Ten statement.

Pat Narduzzi eviscerates voters.

Pitt walked into Lane Stadium on Friday night and left with a 35-33 win. Virginia Tech’s game-winning field goal missed wide left on the final play of the game.

Both teams entered that contest 4-0. Neither was ranked, marking the first meeting between undefeated, unranked teams this late in the season since the 1980s. It had never happened at the major conference level.

After the win, Panthers head coach Pat Narduzzi told AP Poll voters to “wake their a— up,” and put Pitt in the rankings. It worked. His team is now ranked 25th in the standings.

Harvard’s Hail Mary wins it.

Harvard trailed Colgate in its home opener 17-14 with four seconds left on the clock. A false start pushed the Crimson out of field goal range and forced a Hail Mary attempt. The prayer was answered.

QB Charlie Smith heaved a pass 45 yards towards the endzone. It was caught short of the goal line, then lateralled back to a teammate that raced to the pylon. The improbable touchdown gave Harvard a 20-17 victory.

Yale QB throws 4 TDs in honor of late father.

Former Yale football coach Tony Reno passed away late last week from health complications. He’d stepped down one season after his son’s transfer to the university.

Dante Reno is the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback. He returned from injury one day after his dad’s passing to lead Yale to a comeback victory.

Reno threw four touchdowns in a 41-24 win over Merrimack. He helped the Bulldogs overcome a 21-7 first half deficit. It was easily the most powerful performance of the weekend.

Kentucky stuns South Carolina.

Kentucky trailed South Carolina on the road 17-0 midway through the first half. It stormed back to win 35-34 in overtime. It was the largest road comeback in program history.

The Wildcats surrendered a touchdown on the first overtime possession after the Gamecocks forced the extra period. It answered with a score and successful two-point conversion. Kentucky is now 4-1 and making waves in the SEC.

Caitlin Clark returns to Iowa.

The WNBA superstar returned to Iowa as guest picker on College Gameday. The Hawkeyes hosted Ohio State in Iowa City. She predicted an upset, which unfortunately didn’t happen.

While she did not set a new guest picker record, she was one of the best celebrities on the show to date. She called out Nick Saban for his bias towards Alabama. She ribbed Pat McAfee on numerous occasions. It was A+ entertainment.

During the game, she was also seen taking part in the awesome Iowa tradition of waving to the children’s hospital outside the stadium. The final score wasn’t what she wanted, but she seemed to enjoy her return to campus.

College football players keep sniffing their crotches.

Texas went viral for a pair of vulgar celebrations in a win over Tennessee last weekend. Linebacker Colin Simmons pretended to urinate on the field. Running back Raleek Brown sniffed his crotch after scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Players were reprimanded after going viral. The celebrations, however, aren’t going away. Alabama QB Keelon Russell imitated Brown’s sniff in a win over Mississippi State. Boise State’s Dylan Riley did it, too.

The dance is said to have trended on TikTok. I’d never seen it until last week. It’s definitely bizarre but it’s getting more popular. I’m guessing we’ll see it again in Week 6.

Colorado throws the shortest pick-6 ever.

Texas Tech beat Colorado on the road Saturday night in Boulder. The Red Raiders scored one of their touchdowns on a fourth quarter pick-six.

On the play, quarterback Isaac Wilson rolled out and attempted to hit a receiver from inside his own endzone. The ball was intercepted by John Curry. He was already across the goal line. There was no need to run!

Texas Tech won the game, 29-7 to improve to 5-0.

Jim Mora fired an assistant during the game.

Colorado State was beaten handily at home by Oregon State on Saturday in PAC 12 play. The defense surrendered 56 points in the blowout. Thirty-five came before halftime.

Defensive coordinator Tyson Summers was relieved of his duties during the game. He did not return for the second half. Jim Mora said he left the field. That’s something you don’t see every day!

Air Force flyover vs. Navy.

Air Force went all out for a rivalry matchup with Navy over the weekend. The Falcons were decked out in all black with “Stealth Mode” jerseys inspired by the upcoming B-21 Raider stealth bomber jets.

Before kickoff, a pair of B-2 Stealth Bombers flew over the stadium. The scene was incredible, and the perfect start for the military foes. Air Force would wind up winning the game, 14-9.

Mississippi Valley State shocks Prairie View.

Mississippi Valley State pulled off a major upset over Prairie View A&M on Saturday at home. They did so after erasing a 24-0 deficit.

The Panthers dominated the first half, scoring on four of their first five possessions. The Delta Devils stormed back to take a 28-27 lead with three minutes left to play. It was MVSU’s first win over Prairie View since 2022 in a series that’s been recently dominated by the Panthers.

The locker room scene was electric after the upset.

Minnesota storms the field.

The Golden Gophers knocked off Michigan in Minneapolis this weekend, 20-14. Fans stormed the field after the fact, trolling the Wolverines in the process.

“Mr. Brightside,” which plays at each Michigan football game, blared on the loudspeakers in Huntington Bank Stadium as fans gathered at midfield. A dance party erupted on the logo.

The Gophers are now tied atop the Big Ten standings. Michigan is in the cellar at 0-2. What a time to be alive.
